Contract Update: York Railway Museum 05/09/2024

In January 2023 the museum’s Station Hall closed for its biggest redevelopment since the museum opened in 1975. Built in the 1870s, the hall was originally home to York’s main goods station and was still in operation as a freight depot right up until the early 1970s, becoming part of the museum in 1975.

 WHL Building Services Ltd of York carried out the refurbishment of the roof so internal works can continue un-inhibited. The use of fully Stainless Steel Fasteners and Class "A" Butyl Sealants, giving the 25 year warranty required. 

During its closure, Station Hall will receive a replacement roof as well as structural and decorative repairs to glazing, brickwork and walls, beautifully sympathetic to the building’s Victorian railway heritage. The new roof will provide a thermally efficient and weather-tight solution to protect the collection and preserve the historic Grade II-listed structure.

Walls added in the 2010s will also be removed, and new glazing will enhance the splendour of the hall creating views to South Yard.

The revitalised and reimagined Station Hall will reopen in Spring 2025, sustainable and reinvigorated for years to come.
